| James Hainey of
Dumbarton wrote to say he was on board The SS Dunnotar Castle
of the Union Castle Shipping Company that had been requisitioned
by The War Office as a troopship.
"I was right behind Strathallan when the torpedo struck
but we did not stop to pick up survivors"
James told a poignant story in these few words.
"One troopship had been torpedoed, to attempt rescue,
closing down engines would have left Dunnotar Castle a sitting
duck placing thousands more at risk. The unfortunate soldiers
and nurses in the water had to fend for themselves".
